The end of Optical Media?

Apple has just released their refresh to their Mac Mini line and the discussion was about a feature that they didn’t have: an optical drive.

Just like floppy disk drives (remember those!) were ditched on the original iMac, Apple has ditched the optical drive on their Macbook Air, but now for the first time, there is no optical drive on one of their desktop machine.

Is it the end of optical media?  I know that CDs and DVDs will still be with us for a while, but that was the case with the floppy when it disappeared off the iMac, you could still get an external drive (if you wanted one), but most people just did without it.

I use my optical drives occasionally, though the time where optical media drives are ubiquitous is fast coming to an end.
